What is RFC 10023?

A practical guide to publishing domain sale intent in DNS.

A sale signal that works alongside your website

RFC 10023 is an informational IETF document describing the _for-sale DNS convention. It lets a domain publisher advertise sale intent without replacing an active homepage. It does not create a marketplace, authenticate a seller or guarantee that an offer is still available.

The record fields

Each record starts with v=FORSALE1; and may carry one content field. fval carries an uppercase currency code followed by a decimal amount. furi carries a contact or listing URI. ftxt carries human-readable text. fcod is a code whose meaning is agreed by cooperating systems. Multiple distinct records, including multiple prices, may coexist.

Configure your DNS

At your existing DNS provider, add TXT records with the name _for-sale. Put each field in a separate TXT record and keep each record within one 255-byte character-string. You normally do not need to change nameservers. Some providers expect the complete _for-sale.example.com name instead of the short label.

Validate and maintain

Use our RFC 10023 checker after saving your records. DNS caches may delay visibility; a TTL of one hour or less is recommended by the RFC. Remove the records when you no longer offer the domain. The syntax checker cannot establish the truth of a publisher’s claims.
